Rate of Twist
We have had a number of people asking about the rate of twist for some rifles. Here is a list of standard rate of twists for some of the popular calibers that are available to day. Please bear in mind that this is what is generally available in factory rifles. There are some manufacturers that use non-standard twist for one reason or another. Lazzeroni and Weatherby for instance, use a slower twist in their rifles. Theoretically, this should give a slight velocity increase, but might not be good for the heavier bullets. Some barrels are available in different twist rates to suit different bullets. Generally, the heavier the bullet, the faster twist rate required to stabilize it.
Those of you who are considering building a rifle and have not decided on what twist rate you should have in your barrel, might like to look at our data for the 223 Remington with a fast twist rate and the heavier bullets. Personally, I would go for a faster twist rather than a slower one.
