475/416 RIGBY IMPROVED

We built this rifle on a Dakota 76 action. The idea was to duplicate the ballistics of the 475 A&M magnum, which is based on the 460 Weatherby case. And as we are not too fond of belted cases, we chose the 416 Rigby case instead. We did check the case capacity of both the 460 Weatherby and the 416 Rigby. They seem to have almost exactly the same capacity to the base of the neck, so the following data can be used for the 475 A&M magnum as well.

We were unable to come anywhere near the velocity advertised for the 475 A&M magnum, as published in the Cartridges Of The World. Probably, as with a lot of wildcats from the past, you have to take their claimed velocity with a very large dose of salt! Still, this is a very powerful cartridge, and will do for any animal that walks this earth.

We did not try to ascertain the accuracy of this rifle, as its main purpose is as a short-range stopper. All groups were fired at an 8-inch bullseye with open sights, and all bullets were in the black.

Federal 215 primers were used in 416 Rigby brass made by Norma.
