This is the biggest eland any of us has seen before. But, I am afraid I cannot tell you what a hard and difficult hunt we had to get him. A couple of bulls gave us the run around a few days earlier, where we had to chase them for hours without manageing to get a shot.
But, this one was a gift. We stopped at our usual place to have lunch near the border of our concession. When we arrived, we saw a large herd of eland very far away, including what looked like a good size bull. There were also the usual lot, consisting of waterbuck and some wildebeast, as well as some hippos.
We put the table and chairs up, and had a delicious lunch (don't tell Rene that. We usually complain that something very essential to our enjoyment was missing!)
After we have had our lunch, some took a short siesta. Once we decided to get on our way, I went to the endge of the river to have a final look, and saw nothing. Even the eland herd I saw previous have gone.
I was in the truck, waiting for everyone to get on so we can go hunting. Our game scout was whispering something, and pointing towards Alan, who was at the edge of the river. Alan saw a few eland coming out of the forest to feed on the river, and this grand old bull was there amongst them! I jumped out of the truck, and we all ran along the forest to get closer to them.
A few minutes later, we were all admiring this eland, and our great luck.
Just to give you an eye of teh size, the rifle is almost 47 inches long.
